Wits CISO Galeboe Mogotsi believes that AI is rapidly transforming higher education by enhancing learning experiences and much more. During his sit-down with CIO South Africa, Galeboe shared insights on the transformative role AI is set to play in shaping the future of academia.
According to Galeboe, one of the most profound impacts of AI is its ability to create personalised learning experiences. AI-driven platforms can analyse student performance data and tailor content delivery to meet individual needs.
“This personalised approach helps address the unique strengths and weaknesses of each student, providing a more effective and engaging learning experience. AI can also adapt in real-time, offering students additional resources or adjusting the pace of lessons based on their progress, which leads to better learning outcomes,” he adds.
Galeboe went on to say that beyond the classroom, AI is revolutionising administrative processes in higher education. Tasks such as admissions, grading and student support are becoming more automated, allowing staff to focus on more complex and strategic activities.
“For instance, chatbots and virtual assistants powered by AI can provide 24/7 support to students, answering frequently asked questions and guiding them through administrative processes such as course registration or financial aid applications,” Galeboe explains. “This not only enhances efficiency but also improves the student experience by providing quicker responses and reducing administrative burdens.”
The power of data
AI’s ability to harness data for decision-making is another game-changer. Universities are using AI to analyse large datasets, uncovering insights into student success, enrollment patterns and resource allocation.
“Predictive analytics is one example, which allows institutions to identify students who may be at risk of falling behind and intervene with targeted support, improving retention rates,” Galeboe reveals. “AI-driven insights are also being used to inform curriculum development, ensuring that programmes remain relevant to industry trends and future job market demands.”
From a research perspective, AI is becoming an invaluable tool, enabling advanced data analysis and simulations that would otherwise take significant time and resources. “As research becomes increasingly data-driven, AI will continue to play a pivotal role in accelerating discoveries and enhancing academic contributions,” he says.
Looking ahead, Galeboe envisions AI becoming central to lifelong learning. “AI can facilitate personalised learning paths, enabling learners to access the exact skills and knowledge they need, when they need it. AI could also be used to create adaptive courseware that adjusts in real-time based on student engagement, further enhancing the learning experience,” he says.
However, Galeboe is also careful to highlight that as AI’s influence grows, it also presents new challenges, particularly around ethics and bias. “Ethical frameworks will be crucial in shaping how AI is implemented and ensuring that its benefits are distributed equitably,” he notes.
Navigating ethics and compliance
Experimenting with AI is just one piece of the puzzle – and arguably the most exciting part. The real challenge lies in implementing it seamlessly while ensuring ethical considerations and compliance are prioritised – an aspect Galeboe sees as both a challenge and an opportunity.
“Integrating AI technologies in higher education brings many opportunities, but it also presents significant challenges, particularly in the areas of ethics and compliance. One of the primary concerns is ensuring that AI tools are used in a way that respects the privacy and security of data,” he points out.
Given that higher education institutions manage extensive volumes of sensitive data about students, faculty, and research, safeguarding this information is paramount. Ensuring compliance with regulations like the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) is therefore of critical importance.
Here are some of the other challenges that come with AI integration:
- Bias and fairness in AI algorithms – AI systems are only as good as the data they are trained on, and if that data contains biases, the AI can produce unfair or discriminatory outcomes. This is particularly concerning when AI is used in decision-making processes, such as admissions, grading, or financial aid allocations.
- Transparency and explainability – AI systems often operate as ‘black boxes’, where the internal workings of how decisions are made are not always clear to users. This lack of transparency can create trust issues among stakeholders – students, faculty, and administrators – who rely on these systems for critical decisions.
- Compliance and regulatory hurdles – the legal landscape surrounding AI is still evolving, and institutions must navigate this uncertainty while ensuring that they remain compliant with existing laws. This requires staying informed about new regulations and standards governing AI use, which can vary significantly depending on the jurisdiction. (i.e., varied international data privacy requirements, AI accountability, and ethical considerations) making it challenging to adopt AI technologies that operate across borders.
- Stakeholder resistance – the introduction of AI into higher education may raise concerns about job displacement, particularly among administrative staff who fear that automation could render their roles obsolete or its potential to undermine human decision-making.
Galeboe highlights resource allocation as a key practical challenge in integrating AI, noting that implementing and maintaining AI systems demands substantial investment in both financial resources and technical expertise.
“Institutions must evaluate whether they have the necessary infrastructure and skilled personnel to manage AI technologies effectively. In many cases, institutions will need to allocate resources not just for the AI tools themselves but also for ongoing oversight, to ensure that ethical standards are upheld and compliance requirements are met,” he concludes.
