Several prominent universities have successfully implemented Zero Trust Architecture, providing valuable insights and lessons for South African institutions.

The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford University has integrated ZTA across its systems to secure its diverse user base, ensuring that only authorised individuals and devices can access its network. Their approach includes robust identity and access management, device security, network segmentation and data governance, setting a benchmark for other institutions​ (SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory).

According to MIT News, MIT Lincoln Laboratory has also embraced Zero Trust principles to protect against insider threats and other cyber vulnerabilities. Their implementation focuses on continuous verification of user identities and devices, reducing the risk of unauthorised access and enhancing overall security resilience​.

Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute (SEI) has been a strong advocate for Zero Trust, sharing best practices and hosting industry events to facilitate the adoption of ZTA across various sectors. Their insights into the challenges and strategies for implementing ZTA can guide universities in navigating the complexities of this security paradigm​.
