Eugene Van der Merwe appointed CIO of Tiger Brands

Eugene Van der Merwe has been announced as the newly-appointed CIO of Tiger Brands.

Eugene brings more than 25 years of industry experience to the role and more than 15 years dedicated to leading IT strategy and operations within JSE-listed FMCG organisations. His appointment reflects a track record of guiding large technology environments through periods of operational change, business growth and evolving digital requirements.

He joins Tiger Brands from AVI, where he served as CIO for almost a decade. During his tenure he oversaw the development and execution of the company’s strategic technology plan, managed core infrastructure and ensured that technology capabilities remained aligned with organisational priorities.

His career includes senior leadership roles at UCS Solutions and BCX, where he focused on complex technology environments and large scale solutions delivery. Eugene’s business experience also extends to mergers and acquisitions. He has played a central role in technical due diligence processes and has worked across business functions to support collaboration and informed decision-making during transitional periods.

Eugene holds a master’s in metaphysics from the University of Sedona in Arizona in the US. He is a committed lifelong learner and has completed multiple leadership and professional development programmes throughout his career.
