IT veteran Christopher Kistasamy takes the helm at Makwa IT as new CEO

CIO South Africa trusted partner Makwa IT has welcomed Christopher Kistasamy as its new CEO – he succeeds Makwa IT’s founder and now-chairperson, Lethabo Mokone.

Makwa IT, a South African-born, fastest-growing, and diverse (ownership-wise) digital technologies company that helps both private and public sector customers realise the benefits of digital transformation, has appointed Christopher Kistasamy as its new CEO, effective 1 March 2024. He succeeds Makwa IT’s founder and current chairperson, Lethabo Mokone, who recently stepped down as the IT firm’s CEO and assumed the role of chairperson.

Christopher brings in more than 25 years’ experience within the technology space, spanning across various industries. Prior to joining Makwa IT, Christopher was the executive for enterprise shared services at the Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority. Christopher also spent close to a decade at Standard Bank Group, where he occupied several senior roles such as IT executive head: software quality engineering, engineering principles, acting IT executive head: technical platforms and tools, and his last role as IT executive head for engineering practices and enterprise tools.

“I had to think deeply about what my next venture would be and how best I could make an impact given my background and experience. As I reflect on my career to date and the humble beginnings that I was born into, I am filled with tremendous gratitude and humility, but more importantly a fervent sense of responsibility not just to the people on whose shoulders I stand, but also to the next generation, both current and future, that we must ensure a sustainable future for,” comments Christopher about his decision to accept the new role.

According to Christopher, the technology sector is indeed one of those sectors globally that is primed to drive economic growth and given my experience over the last many years. As such, he was very keen to join an organisation that is impact driven, has its roots deeply set in the African context but with a global outlook, and has a passion for empowering our youth much like Makwa IT.

“To this end I am extremely privileged and honoured to be joining Makwa IT as its CEO, where I am certain we will continue to capitalise on the vast opportunities within the technology space whilst making a positive impact in South Africa as well as the rest of the African continent.”

Christopher’s experience in the technology space has seen him build a solid reputation and skill set, including the ability to lead and implement business process re-engineering strategies, manage the organisational IT strategy development and implementation – to create a capability that enables optimum sustainable value.

From an engineering perspective, Christopher is an expert in analysing the impact of implemented strategies – to monitor and manage outcomes, and drive digital transformation strategies using new cloud platforms and agile methodologies, to mention a few.

Christopher completed his honours degree in information technology at the Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Malaysia. He also holds a master’s degree in technology from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, and has participated in IESE Business School's leadership development programme for management development.

He has amazing plans for Makwa and envisions expanding the company’s presence further afield on the African continent. “The African story is compelling, with significant opportunity provided by the likes of the African Continental Free Trade Area for reaching and engaging with other countries,” he notes.

Chris Kistasamy also hopes to broaden the company’s global footprint beyond the UAE and the US. In addition to enhancing MakwaIT’s value proposition, “we have predominantly played in the infrastructure and cybersecurity spaces, but there is runway to further diversify our capabilities, particularly in Cloud and AI,” he explains.

In achieving this, Christopher will continue to collaborate proactively with clients and partners to align with emerging trends and drive innovation. He’s not all business, and keeps active to clear his mind – Christopher enjoys both watching and playing football in his spare time.
