Nomthi is the South African counterpart to the group’s CIO, Nikos Angelopoulos, who is a 2023 CIO Awards nominee.
In May this year MTN SA announced the appointment of Nomthi Nelwamondo as executive for information technology (IT). Nomthi’s appointment was a deliberate move by MTN to ensure the company’s evolution from telco to techco as it works to deliver on its Ambition 2025 strategy. The executive for network role is a new position within MTN’s technology business that will assist MTN in achieving its next-generation network goals, according to the group.
Nomthi joined MTN SA with more than 21 years of experience in IT, network, and commercial operational roles in the telecommunications and insurance industries.
Nomthi has an international honours degree in software engineering from Malaysia, a master’s degree in information technology from the University of Pretoria, and a second master’s degree in business leadership (MBL) from the University of South Africa.
She began her career at Telkom and has held various leadership positions in the industry, including CIO of Liquid Telecom South Africa. Nomthi comes to MTN SA from Assupol Holdings Limited, where she was group CIO.
MTN South Africa CTO Michele Gamberini recently left and was replaced by Rami Farah, who has been with the Group since 2001 and has worked as CTO in a number of countries, including MTN Liberia, MTN Rwanda, MTN Uganda, and most recently MTN Iran, where he supervised over 16,000 sites.
