Standard Bank group CIO Jörg Fischer says that the hackathon has been instrumental in insourcing, and creating a culture of innovation.
Standard Bank Group CIO and 2023 CIO of the Year, Jörg Fischer, recently highlighted the value of hackathons in identifying talent. He was commenting on the launch of the financial services provider’s 10th annual hackathon.
“Since our inaugural event, we’ve made significant progress, uncovering emerging talent and innovative solutions, and providing our teams with opportunities for real-time problem-solving,” he explained.
The hackathon aligns with Jörg’s long-standing approach to talent development. In an exclusive interview with CIO South Africa earlier this year, Jörg offered valuable advice for aspiring CIOs aiming for leadership roles in the future.
“My advice to young people, who look up to leaders such as myself, would be that balance is key, be committed, block out the noise (the distractions), and build a strong filtering system for negativity – it’s not worth it. Be patient! And honour your commitments: always under promise, but over-deliver. I am old fashioned in that way: I believe that hard work will always pay off,” he said.
Inquisitiveness is one of the valuable traits Jörg looks for in his quest to uncover the next great leaders and innovators. “Continue to be curious because you are never too old to learn, never get too comfortable and challenge the status quo, and always strive for consistency not only at work, but in life too!”
In addition to unearthing talent within the company, the hackathon aims to embed innovation within Standard Bank.
“Our commitment to integrating innovative solutions into our client services is unwavering. It reflects our mission to drive Africa’s growth and our dedication to prioritising our clients’ evolving needs,” Jörg added.
