The Wits CIO is now in the running for an award at the Oscars of IT in November.
Dr Stanley Mpofu, CIO at the University of the Witwatersrand, has been nominated for the prestigious 2024 CIO Awards, often dubbed the Oscars of IT. With the awards ceremony set for November, Stanley stands a chance to be recognised for his contributions in the field of information technology.
Stanley has been with Wits since May 2017 and introduced the innovative concept of a ‘smart classroom’ in 2018, two years ahead of the Covid-19 pandemic. His career in IT began in 1995 as a desktop support technician. He then advanced to the role of network administrator at Transnet’s Datavia, where he spent a decade.
His journey continued at Eskom, where he held various positions over 15 years, including project manager, programme manager and project office manager. In 2010, he was promoted to executive manager, responsible for ICT strategy and operations across the Eskom Enterprises group of companies, and chaired the tender committee.
Stanley earned his PhD in strategy and leadership from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2009. He is actively involved in multiple councils and boards, including as chair of Higher Education Information Technology South Africa (HETSA), and board member of the Tertiary Education & Research Network of South Africa (TENET) and the Public Sector ICT Forum (PICT). Additionally, he is a member of the Institute of Chartered IT Professionals, the Ministerial Task Team for Higher Education, and the Institute of Directors South Africa (IODSA).
The process for the CIO Awards involves a comprehensive and rigorous evaluation. Judges meticulously assess each nominee based on their dossier and conduct in-depth two-hour interviews to highlight their achievements and excellence in various aspects of IT leadership.
