Harmony Gold appoints Len de Villiers as interim CIO

Len’s appointment is aligned with Harmony’s strategy to modernise and strengthen information systems, and will assist in recruiting candidates for the mining giant's permanent CIO position.

Harmony Gold Group has appointed Len de Villiers as interim CIO with immediate effect. Len will form part of the group CEO’s office and report to the group’s financial director. He will be responsible for addressing any IT challenges that were identified through Harmony’s independent assessment and review of its information services, and will assist in recruiting candidates for the permanent CIO position.

“When we are certain of the type of scope of the modifications required, we will provide more information about structural changes in the IS function,” said Boipelo Lekubo, Harmony Gold’s financial director.

Len is a seasoned IT professional with more than 40 years’ experience. Before retiring, he was a group CIO in some of the country’s most reputable organisations, including the JSE, Telkom, Absa, and Nedbank, when he was still active in corporate.

Len completed a national diploma in electronic data processing at the Tygerberg Technical College. He holds qualifications in finance, information technology and telecommunications, and DIS: information technology from institutions such as the Geneva Information Technology Institute (GITI): Insead Business School, Wits Business School, and Harvard Business School.
