Lubabalo Lokwe named as the new CIO of Nelson Mandela University

Lubabalo Lokwe has been appointed chief information officer (CIO) of Nelson Mandela University (NMU), supporting the institution’s Vision 2030 strategy.

Lubabalo Lokwe brings more than 20 years of experience across ICT leadership, digital transformation and business optimisation. A chartered CIO, he will lead NMU’s IT strategy development and execution, ensuring alignment between technology initiatives and institutional priorities.

Prior to joining NMU, Lubabalo served as business optimisation advisor to the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa. He has also held senior leadership roles at Adapt IT, the National Skills Fund and Sita.

“I am deeply honoured to step into the role of chief information officer at Nelson Mandela University. This appointment is both a professional milestone and a personal commitment to advancing our Vision 2030 journey. My focus is on building digital transformation that is ethical, inclusive and sustainable, technology that serves people, strengthens our academic mission and reflects Ubuntu values of connection and care,” Lubabalo comments on his appointment.

He holds an MBA from Tshwane University of Technology and a master’s in information systems from the University of Roehampton, along with certifications in business analysis and business process management from the University of Pretoria.

“I believe innovation is most powerful when it resonates with the community, and I look forward to collaborating with colleagues, partners and peers to position NMU as a benchmark for responsible ICT leadership in Africa.
