May Govender joins the race for the CIO of the Year title

May is the latest IT leader to be nominated for the 2024 CIO Awards.

May Govender, Group CIO at Old Mutual, has been nominated for the 2024 CIO Awards. She assumed her current role in 2023 after serving as the group’s deputy CIO since 2021. With over 19 years of experience in the IT sector, May’s career spans financial services, telecommunications and retail industries. Her expertise and leadership were showcased in the second issue of the 2023 CIO magazine, where she was featured on the cover.

May began her IT career as an IT lecturer and principal at PC Training and Business College. She later joined UUNET SA, Symetrix and Fujitsu Services as a project manager. Transitioning into the financial services industry, she held roles at Standard Bank, including head for channels, and served as bank CIO at TymeBank. She returned to Standard Bank as CIO for card and payments. May holds an MBA from Henley Business School.

The 2024 CIO Awards recognise individuals who have excelled in an IT capacity in their respective industries, built and led great teams, and effectively completed crucial initiatives in their organisations. The awards also highlight the world-class excellence that has come to be associated with South Africa’s top IT executives.
