Norbit has been nominated for the 2023 CIO Awards.

Norbit Williams, CIO at the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), has been nominated for the 2023 CIO Awards. He joins other IT leaders vying for the coveted CIO of the Year title.

Norbit is a public sector CIO through and through, having spent close to a decade at the after the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD), and a half-decade with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

However, he admits that moving from the private sector to the public sector is not an easy transition. “It’s a hectic change,” he says. “In the private sector, a decision is a decision, and you can move hastily, but in the public sector, you have red tape coming out of your ears.”

He did, although, maintain some of his corporate mentality of being able to expedite certain decisions.

In his tenure as CIO, Norbit has managed to maintain a clean ICT audit finding from the Auditor-General of South Africa across the departments in national government, and also the highest score (Level 4) in terms of MPAT rating for ICT.

Nobit holds a BCom in information technology from the University of the Western Cape, and a master’s in information technology from the University of Pretoria. He has also participated in several executive development programmes both locally and abroad.
