Jörg flew helicopters in the past, but now he’s landed a nomination for the CIO Awards.

Jörg Fischer, group CIO of Standard Bank Group, has been nominated for the 2023 CIO Awards. He has more than 26 years’ experience in technology, operations, shared services, including real estate and finance. Jörg is passionate about making a difference for clients by transforming the business.

As the group CIO of Standard Bank Group, Jörg holds a vital position with a significant portfolio. His primary responsibility is overseeing technology operations within the organisation. This involves leveraging technology to drive innovation and transformation across the business, ensuring that the bank remains at the forefront of digital advancements in the financial industry. By being in charge of group real estate services as well, he has an additional dimension to his role, overseeing the management and optimisation of the bank’s real estate assets.

Prior to being appointed as group CIO, Jörg was the executive head of group shared services (group operations), and group real estate services for several years. In this role, Jörg created the group shared services by migrating the majority of all processing functions across the organisation into it, becoming a multi-tiered global business services organisation.

In the real estate portfolio, Jörg significantly reduced the current head office and branch space across the many locations, by “redesigning the ways of work” with emphasis on employee and client experience. He also delivered several new head office builds executed on the African continent, driving the theme of sustainability.

Jörg's greatest strengths are his diverse and broad breadth and depth of financial services knowledge, business strategy and architecture, financial accounting, technology, banking operations, global business services (multi-tier shared services), culture transformation, digitalisation, and strategic contract negotiator.

Jörg personifies the concept when finance and technology collide. He is a chartered accountant by training but a technologist at heart. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance and became a CA(SA) certified in 1995. Jörg has also completed the advanced management and leadership programme (AMLP) with Oxford, Said Business School, and the management and leadership course with MIT Sloan School of Management.

He is also a non-executive board member of Standard Bank Lesotho, a director of several Standard Bank Group real estate companies, and was a member of the group exco, until 2020. Over his tenure he has served on and is currently a member of several executive committees, group sub-boards and various international technology advisory councils/ boards.

Jörg is in the running for an award on 15 November, an evening that will celebrate IT excellence, and which has been dubbed the “Oscars of IT”.
